I absolutely adore this recipe – it calls back such memories of my childhood. While my own mother or grandmother didn’t make it, it seems like everybody’s ELSE’s granny or meemaw did – and I think I saw this at every potluck and church supper or civic club even I attended. I normally don’t cook this way – I really don’t like to use much of anything that’s packaged. But I haven’t been able to to reproduced these flavors without the muffin mix, and it’s just not the same without it. But that’s ok – for the majority of the year I really concentrate on making as much from fresh, natural and organic real food as possible. But I do believe heritage recipes are allowed. So I do make this for the holidays, and use it as a means by which to tell stories to my kids about the folks from my childhood, especially the relatives they’ll never meet. I think that’s a pretty precious use of a classic recipe. So allow yourself a treat – and try this recipe. You’ll be glad you did.
